Richard describes very accurately what it was like for thousands of children like him during the depression and World War 2 along the Mexican border. It describes the hunger, deprivation and humanity of those slightly better off. It highlights the efficacy of the CCC and early recruitment into the army for millions. It is the true odyssey of a boy to manhood and fatherhood through one of the most trying times in our history.
